Below is from the Sumerian/Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, first published over four thousand years ago. The excerpt is a response to King Uruk's quest for immortality.

You will never find the eternal life that you seek.
When the great gods created mankind, they also created death.
And they held back eternal life for themselves alone.
Man is born, lives and then dies.
This is the order that great gods have decreed.
But until the end comes, enjoy your life.
Spend it in happiness not despair.
Savour your food.
Make each of your days a delight…
Let music and dance fill your home.
Love the child who holds your hand
And give your wife pleasure in your embrace.
That is the best way for a man to live.
For this too is the lot of Man.
